The Hekab-Be community library in Akumal is organizing delivery of food supplies for those who are struggling financially in the Akumal Pueblo. Most people of Akumal have lost their jobs, as tour operators, local business, and hotels have closed due to COVID19.
There is no unemployment insurance in Mexico and even before the pandemic many families were struggling to make ends meet. With the uncertainty we all face with the current situation who knows when we will be able to receive tourists again. Without tourism, they have no economy.
So far, Hekab-be have been able to organize food boxes for 150 families but there are many more in need.
